Public Liability Insurance Vocational Placement (Prac)

General Information regarding Public Liability Insurance while you are on Vocational Placement (Prac).

Outlined below is the extent of insurance cover taken out by Universal Education and Training Ltd (Trading as Language Training Institute) for unpaid vocational placements in accordance with the requirements of the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000.

To comply with the Act, UNET has taken out worker’s compensation cover for students participating in unpaid vocational placements. Under this contract, students are entitled to lump sum worker’s compensation payments for injuries that result in permanent impairment or death, but are not covered for the payment of damages arising out of these injuries.

To provide damages cover, again in accordance with the Act, UNET has taken out liability insurance which indemnifies the placement person against:

  • claims for damages brought by a student for injury to the student, or loss of or damage to the student’s property arising out of the vocational placement;
  • claims for damages brought by another person for injury to the person or loss of or damage to the person’s property arising out of the placement; or
  • loss of or damage to the placement person’s property caused by the student in the placement.

The policy also covers students against claims for damages brought by the placement person, an employee or agent of the placement person, or another person for injury to a person or loss of or damage to property arising out of the placement.

It should be noted that the policy is subject to some exclusions (ie. occupations, activities or circumstances for which liability is not accepted by the insurer). All possible measures have been taken to ensure that the student’s placement is not affected by any of these exclusions.

It should also be noted that the policy does not guarantee the immediate or total reimbursement of all claims involving student’s medical, hospital or ambulance expenses. For example, delays may be experienced in finalising some personal injury claims or the insurer may wholly or partially reject some claims due to contributory negligence on the part of the student or for other reasons. If these possibilities are a matter of some concern for you, it is suggested that you give some consideration to taking out your own personal medical or hospital insurance.
